Farm

One 14 year old girl from Iowa commented, “The farm is AMAZING.”  In less than one year, this 9 acres has gone from bush to breadbasket!  The land has been cleared and every square foot is now being used to grow food for the children of JCC.  All of this work was done without the modern conveniences of farming;  no tractors, no plows, no oxen, no irrigation systems.

Our farmer, Harry, is a gifted and hard-working man!  He and his two staff have made progress that could only happen with blessings from God.  They are raising corn, cassava, rice, potatoes, and more.  Harry’s next desire is to start a fish farm to provide protein for the children. God has blessed us this year with the funds to begin a substantial goat herd. Harry is in the process of clearing land for the goat pen and the new guinea hens. The goats will provide a severely lacking need of protein for our own kids and the many kids we have in our foster care system.

The farm is also a training ground for the children at JCC who may someday become farmers themselves.  It will play an important role in helping the children learn to provide for themselves as they become independent adults.

The addition of the goats to the farm has recently created some challenges for our farmer! The goats eat everything! The goats are now being moved to a nearby village so that Mr. Kandeh can continue to plant and harvest without the fear of destruction of the crops by the goats! We are also in the process of investigating solar powered electric fencing to use to keep the goats from the crops!

One crop the goats won’t eat is benny seed. Mr Kandeh made good use of his resources and planted a crop of the seed used in various foods, and most importantly, in food for babies!
